Author and director Bart Meuleman changes down a gear, briefly swapping the large work for the small. After the earlier large-scale productions Half elf zomeravond based on Marguerite Duras’ novel Dix heures et demie du soir en été (Ten-Thirty on a Summer Night) and Hugo Claus’ De verwondering (Wonder), he once again zooms in on one figure on stage, as he did with the magical De man in de mist (The Man in the Mist).
From her high chair, a girl is reading aloud the thoughts and desires of the man who is watching her. She talks, she beckons, she entices, she comforts. Will he go away, or will he come in and join her?
Six years after The Bult and the Beautiful director Bart Meuleman is making another show that explores the depths of erotic fantasy. It takes us on a short philosophical journey in which the voice plays the lead role. Whether speaking or singing, that voice never fails to entrance.
