In 2002 Abke Haring graduated from what was then the Herman Teirlinckinstituut in Antwerp with her self-written monologue Nageslachtsfarce/genocide. She has since alternated acting, writing and directing. After Nageslachtsfarce/genocide she went on to write two new plays, Kortstond (zelfbaat/tucht) and Cerebraal Vernis. Together they form a trilogy, a “country farce full of misery and shit, centring on the death of a mother”. Rather than three stories, they are snapshots in time, cross-sections of a head at hectic moments.
Toneelhuis and STUK have now commissioned Abke to write and perform a new play, with Bart Meuleman as advisor and Jean Bernard Koeman as set designer. HOOP is an intense and disturbing, but highly impressive monologue.
