Nine Finger, a joint production by performer Benjamin Verdonck, Rosas dancer Fumiyo Ikeda and choreographer Alain Platel, is undoubtedly one of the most gripping theatrical events of 2007.
It was based on the book Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala, an American of Nigerian origin. Through the eyes of an African child soldier, the author examines the perversity of war. Fumiyo Ikeda and Stijn Van Opstal are bringing this play back to the stage to tell this story again in a child-like poetic, but also brutally honest way. The underlying question remains: how can we relate to the horrors of the world from the perspective of art?
